Description
There was a dark art-age where women could not develop their artistic talents. They worked in their fathers' or husbands' workshops. Women were not allowed to participate in the training male artists received. “As an example, it was not proper for women to see nude models,” Trent said. “They were not allowed to draw the nude human figure, which was part of the basic training of male artists.”
Over time of course all this nonsense was overtaken by time and events. There is no such thing a male or female brain. There is no such thing as a male or female Artist. The brains work exactly the same way. Truthfully, there are so many creative and brilliant female artists in the world today.
Augusta Christine (Fells) Savage was an American sculptor associated with the Harlem Renaissance. She was also a teacher whose studio was important to the careers of a generation of artists who would become nationally known. She worked for equal rights for African Americans in the arts.
In 1929, her sculpture of a child from Harlem, Gamin, earned her widespread recognition and helped her secure a scholarship to study at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere located in Paris, where she exhibited her work and won numerous awards.
Augusta Savage was born on 29 February 1892, Green Cove Springs, Florida, United States. She died on March 1962, New York, New York, United States
